Pietro Elia Barcellona is an Italian double bassist, composer, and improviser active in the fields of contemporary and experimental music. His practice unfolds at the intersection of interpretation, improvisation, and composition, exploring the double bass as a site of experimentation and continuous reinvention. Alongside his concert activity, he composes primarily for solo double bass, approaching composition as a natural extension of his instrumental practice and his ongoing exploration of the instrument's timbral and expressive possibilities.

His work has led him to perform at some of the leading international festivals dedicated to new music, including Manifeste (Paris), Gaudeamus Muziekweek (Utrecht), Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Impuls (Graz), Ravenna Festival, and Musikfestival Bern. In these contexts, he has collaborated with composers such as Beat Furrer and Helmut Lachenmann, as well as with ensembles including Ensemble Intercontemporain, Basel Sinfonietta, Collegium Novum Zürich, and Ensemble Aventure.

As a soloist, Barcellona has distinguished himself with a practice that combines interpretative rigor with experimentation, developing a highly personal approach to the double bass. In 2025, he was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue MusikIn the same year, he received the Coup de cœur at the Nicati Competition in Lucerne, as well as the Second Prize at the John Cage Award in Halberstadt. In 2026, he was also awarded the Fritz Gerber Award at the Lucerne Festival, further recognizing his artistic path and his ongoing research.

His work is also documented through several recordings released by labels such as Clean Feed Records, Another Timbre, and Rubber Commune.

He studied with musicians including Dario Calderone and Uli Fussenegger. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (2022), a Master of Music Performance specializing in contemporary music (2024), and a Master's degree in Open Creation (2026) from the Hochschule für Musik Basel, supported by the Nicati de Luze Foundation and the Cécile und Albert Kupper Foundation. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Improvisation in Contemporary Music, jointly promoted by Siena Jazz, the Accademia Chigiana, and the Conservatorio di Ferrara.

The jury of the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis described his work as follows:

"Double bassist Pietro Elia Barcellona captivates the audience within seconds, whether performing solo repertoire, improvising, or presenting his original 'rewritings' of existing works. His innovative approach and forward-looking vision of the instrument, his technical precision and virtuosity, as well as the natural ease with which he moves between fidelity to the score and personal creative reinterpretation, convinced the jury in every respect."

Elena Schwarz, a member of the jury of the Nicati Competition, wrote:

"Always close to the essence of the pieces with strong aesthetic sensibility and expressive depth, he drew the audience deep into his sound."
